New Adventures, and a New Blog

I am planning a bike tour! This is going to change things for the next few months. I won’t be in Panama, so the Panama blog (http://blog.thepanamaadventure.com/) is probably going to mostly sleep for a while. But, I have started this other blog for my biking adventure and I will be posting updates here.

Since this is the probably first post most of you will see, I thought I would explain what is going on. I plan to fly to Seattle on the 23rd of March (with my bike in a box), spend some time with my daughter and family, get myself and my stuff organized, and then leave on my bike tour on April 1st (fitting, don’t you think?)

I’ll bike down the Pacific coast of Washington, Oregon, and California stopping for a while in Santa Rosa to see my other daughter and family. Then, I will continue down the Pacific Coast to the Baja Peninsula, take a boat over to the mainland of Mexico and bike down to Guadalajara. From there I will probably fly to Cancun (Mexico is huge!) and then bike down the Caribbean coast through Belize. I will probably bus from Belize City to Guatemala City, and then bike through El Salvador, Nicaragua, Costa Rica, and back to Panama.

Of course so far I have only done a short tour to Nicaragua so I don’t know how all this will go. Maybe it will suck and I’ll be on a plane in a week. Maybe it will be fantastic and I won’t want to stop. Only time and experience will tell.

Joel isn’t going with me. He doesn’t enjoy spending hours on a bike so he wouldn’t have fun, and he has already seen a lot of the west coast. But, plans are he will join me for a while in Guadalajara, and then again in Nicaragua. It is very possible we will bus home together from there since I have already biked that before.

So, that is what the gringa loca has been cooking up these days! If this sounds interesting feel free to follow along. At the moment I am mostly posting thoughts and preparations. Before long though, there will be stories and photos of my travels and the things I see and experience along the way.

The Bike gets a total going over in the shop!

If I don’t do it now, then when? Who knows what tomorrow may bring so I plan to use every one of the todays I have been given to live to the fullest.

One thing you need to buy in Seattle is a good pair of BIKING shoes. Ones that have hard soles. Anything with soft soles like tennis shoes are no good because a great deal of the force you’re legs are producing is sucked up by the soft cushioning of the shoes. You want to impart every bit of your energy to the pedals.

I’m looking forward to seeing the posts of your adventure. Buena suerte, amiga.

    • I was planning to wear my hiking shoes, at least until I get south/warm enough to wear my regular shoes. Do you think that will do? or maybe I should take your advice. My son in law is a very serious cyclists so I’ll have him take a look at my shoes. Thanks for point this out.
